Eye Disease and Blindness

I know it is impossible to do, but imagine if you could not even see this lovely photo of a bench in a summer garden?  We all take our gift of sight for granted until something threatens to take it away from us.

I am perhaps more grateful for my sight than most people.  My mother, who passed away from bone marrow cancer just four years ago, was legally blind from the time she was about twelve years old.  Her only sister lost her sight at the same time to a rare genetic disease of the choroid of the eye.

Both me and my brother have a rare genetic defect of the choroid of the eye also.  Both of us have had to go through injections and laser surgeries to try to minimize the effects of the disease, though there is no cure and reoccurence is almost certain.

I take a lot of beautiful pictures now and I look at them often.  I study the faces of my family and friends - just in case.  Everytime I have a new incident, I thank God there is something they can do to help me.  Something they couldn’t do for my mom and my aunt.

I do hope you have a year filled with beautiful visions, scenery and striking artwork.  Enjoy it while you can and appreciate the marvelous but oh-so-delicate gift of sight.
