To Supplement or Not to Supplement
Are vitamin supplements worth the expense and hassle? What about taking a catch-all multi-vitamin pill that has a whole host of vitamins and minerals packed into it? There are many debates and schools of thought about the value of supplementation.
Here are my thoughts. A multivitamin product may have some limited absorption when it is ingested in the body. Some experts say that it often passes through without the vitamins and minerals being properly absorbed and utilized by the body.
They tell you that a good and varied diet is your best stategy. However, the reality is that we all have holes in our diets and don’t always get the variety we need on a day-to-day basis. So take the vitamin pill, to help fill in the gaps. Even if it is not fully utilized it is better than taking nothing.
Sure, it would be better to take individual pills or capsules for each vitamin need, but it is much more expensive and requires a fairly organized and consistent approach to ensuring you get all the supplements you need, timed ceremoniously throughout each 24 hour period.
I think if you eat as balanced a diet as you can, with lots of fruits, vegetables and more chicken and fish than beef and pork, take a multi-vitamin tablet each day, you should be good to go.
Coke is now selling a product called Coke Plus and it does have a few added in vitamins and minerals. This is fine to have one of these per day if you like Coke, but it is NOT a vitamin supplement and you will still need a multivitamin if you drink this regularly.
